Molise to New York ...

My great-great-grandfather, Carlo Paolone (1854-1912) came to the United States with many of his family aboard the ship "Tartar Prince" , arriving at Ellis Island, New York on November 16, 1899. The ship sailed from Genova (Genoa), and the ship manifest listed Carlo's last place of residence as Santo Stefano. Carlo traveled with his wife Irene; sons Domenico, Donato, Paulo; and daughters, Maria Ameila and Elvira. Carlo and Irene were born in Santo Stefano, as were several generations of Paolone's before them. It seems many residents of the town made the journey with them, and others from nearby Campobasso as well. The manifest shows Carlo and the family were headed to Rochester, New York.

Not all of Carlo and Irene's children made this journey with them. Michael Carl (1879-1957) and Edward likely made the trip before the others. There is evidence that members of the family made more than one trip from Italy to the United States and may have also traveled through Canada.

Over the years I have discovered many Paolone's all over the world. With a few exceptions, all trace their family back to the Molise region of Italy- specifically the area around Campobasso.

In New York, the Paolone family name became "Palone" over time.
